Bad idea. I’m not a fan of digital downloads, plus I prefer the physical copy instead.

I could care less. I prefer digital downloads above physical copies.

They shouldn’t get rid of them altogether because people highly appreciate the physical copies of games. I only buy the digital ones whenever there’s a special DLC or a code that I need to add to the physical copy.

Even though I’m a PC gaming fan and I’m not really affected by this, I have to agree that this is extremely depressing.

The end of an era, that’s what I think. Welcome to the future where AI and greedy corporations ruin everything.

SONY & GTA 6… WE’RE COOKED 🤦‍♂️
#1

I’m going to go ahead and let you guys watch the video and then share your opinions on this egregious subject matter. There’s so many red flags being discussed in this video about Sony and Rockstar’s announcement that it just gives me a bitter taste in my mouth. $100 for a damn code without the physical copy is just ridiculous to me. Also, anything could happen online. What if you lose all your movies, games, and anything else you purchased on PS5, then what? I’m looking for a physical copy and it’s absent. A crash could happen and all your files could get wiped out just like that. Or Sony could just decide to get rid of it, who knows.

First, AI takes over and now these businesses and corporations want to make everything digital now?? Give me a damn break! I can’t sell anything to you anymore because it’s all going digital. Welcome to the future of gaming and the end of an era for owning something you paid for, we’re cooked. I’m a huge PlayStation fan, ok? So when I hear that PHYSICAL copies of games WON’T be sold anymore by 2028, it makes me apoplectic. Same thing goes for XBOX.

Interesting choice of commentator.

I'm a PC gamer so I don't have a super strong opinion.

There is legitimate reason to digitize stuff. Physical media breaks down, as much as people want to pretend it doesn't. CDs scratch very easily. Leaving CDs on the table for a small amount seem to causes micro scratches, probably from the vibrations of people walking around or something. My family still rents DVDs from the library sometimes and the odds that a DVD doesn't work is pretty high. Compared to using streaming services to watch movies, it doesn't seem worth the risk of using a potentially damaged disc.

But yeah, the fact that digitization is usually tied to a service that can deny you your games at any moment sucks. I wish the StopKillingGames movement would take off and there were more neutral services like Itch.io and GOG, where if the services failed you could still play the game. I feel like hackers will probably still find ways to revive games, like how PR3 Reborn is technically a hacked copy of PR3 since the platform it was on failed.

At the end of it, I feel like players should always have the option to pick between physical and digital.

I love physical, but digital is often convenient.

Not having an option feels disappointing and disrespectful to gamers.

I agree with you on one thing: You have to keep physical discs in pristine condition to avoid the game freezing and crashing. Yeah, I can understand that because I used to do the same thing with all of my games when it comes to “leaving them on the table” to get dusty. With digital, you’ll be less exasperated knowing that you don’t have to deal with that headache.

On the other hand, there’s just something special and nostalgic about having a tangible piece of history in your hand. Just knowing that if your files were to get wiped out, or Sony deletes them just like they did everyone’s movies, you won’t lose any money with the physical copy. I grew up as a 90s kid where we valued things that were more tangible above anything else.

I agree 100% because at that point it’ll feel like you’re renting the game instead of owning it. The problem is that these major businesses and corporations are greedy, they want control, and they want you groveling for them to provide you with games, period. They figured if you get hooked on games long enough, then they could do whatever they want. So, I think as long as they have a handful of gamers who will spend an abundance of money on things like “ultimate edition for GTA 6”, then I’m sure they’ve figured they’ll make a massive profit on switching to digital only. Plus they don’t want us to own anything.

I agree because not everyone likes to be restricted to only one option to play games. Digital was cool when they did the special dlc editions, but now it’s becoming the norm. Corporations are getting greedier too with these insane prices just for digital.

I definitely lol'd when I saw who it was.

*Looks over at my CD and record collection* Definitely choosing physical media all day and everyday. At the end of the day, I actually own it and do not have to worry about a publisher or service modifying it in any way (looking at the GTA IV soundtrack license debacle). There is also the satisfaction of interacting with it, as you play it.

I still use digital media, but as Sushie said, it is a slap in the face to get rid of the physical option.

This is why we own over 200 physical dvd and blu-ray movies, and digitized them ourselves. We were tired of streaming services pulling the rug from under us. You don't own anything that's digital if they can yank it away at any given moment. People are becoming wiser to this, and we're going to start seeing a rise in physical media again.

Same thing applies with video games. There have been innumerable times where a digital video game gets pulled or becomes inaccessible. The problem here is that they're not even giving gamers the option. Me personally, I'm not risking spending that sort of money on something that I might not keep.

This is about where I stand. I’ll always look for a physical copy if I can but the digital is convenient.

Nit having a choice just plain sucks

They've wanted to make everything digital for years and years, it basically removes the second-hand market so they can continue to sell games at full-price without competition with used games, it also reduces shipping/manufacturing costs for the games. It's just now enough people have good enough internet for them to do this and use that as an excuse
People need options and this is yet another example of tech companies taking options away from people to cut costs and forcing people into having to deal with less choice
