They've wanted to make everything digital for years and years, it basically removes the second-hand market so they can continue to sell games at full-price without competition with used games, it also reduces shipping/manufacturing costs for the games. It's just now enough people have good enough internet for them to do this and use that as an excuse
People need options and this is yet another example of tech companies taking options away from people to cut costs and forcing people into having to deal with less choice
