If it is deserved, then my advice would be to apologize, and if you can't, then write an open letter. It'll help some of the sheer embarrassment go away.

That’s good advice because some people don’t take it too well, and they let it affect them for life. But I guarantee you that no one on this site will even bother to publicly share any past experiences that they’ve had when they were embarrassed.
