Quern - Noun
A primitive tool for grinding grain. More advanced than a 'mortar and pestle', but less advanced than a 'millstone'. Is essentially two flat rocks grinding against each other, with pores for grains to sit in.
The problem with querns, and rock-based grinding in general, is that it produced sand, which mixed with grain products. This 'grit' was ultimately eaten, unless sifted, which was time consuming and wasteful. As a result, stews and savory puddings were popular as it could disguise the stone grit.
