Yeah, I get where you are coming from with slowly building the muscle. The Rippetoe stuff is big on increasing the lifts ASAP, so dieting for underweight, hard-gainers is essentially eat as much as possible to increase bodyweight and therefore, work capacity (up to 20% bodyfat). The negative is aesthetics are thrown out the door, however that is not the goal of strength training/powerlifting. If you want to go for barbell strength/hypertrophy barbell training, I suggest looking into powerbuilding, which combines both principles and keeps aesthetics in mind.
